The medical oath all start with your medical housemanship or internship. In Nigeria it’s simply called housemanship and the medical practitioner either a physician or a dental surgeon is called houseman or houseofficer.

Whereas in the abroad, this stage of a medical doctor career is known as internship and the medical doctors and dentists are known as interns.

Specifically in the US, they are called PGY1 (1st year post graduate) doctors or 1st year residents. In the UK, medical internship is known as FY1 (Foundation Year 1) and FY2 (Foundation Year 2) or F1 and F2.

In Nigeria, to become an houseman or intern, you must have completed:

• your 6 years of medical school if you gained admission through the JAMB and Post UTME processes.
• Or 5 years if you gained admission through the direct entry process.
• Or if you graduated from an accredited medical school outside Nigeria and have passed the MDCN examination.
