Job Summary

The Anaesthetic Nurse is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs of care for patients undergoing surgical procedures. The job holder provides high-quality clinical assistance to the Anesthetist during surgical procedures and also provides clinical supervision on a day-to-day basis to junior nursing staff in the unit.

Key Result Areas (KRA)

The key result areas of this role are:

Medical Functions

  • Assess, develop, implement and evaluate programs of care for patients.
  • Ensure that the anaesthetic room is prepared in accordance with the individual needs of the patient and anaesthetist in terms of drug preparation/administration, IV cannulation, IV fluids and preparation and insertion of invasive monitoring as required.
  • Perform arterial blood gas sampling, recognize and interpret findings and report the findings to the anaesthetist.
  • Assist the Anaesthetist during pre- and intra-operative period initiating care and clinical inter  ventions according to patient’s condition and in accordance with Health regulations.
  • Evaluate patients’ post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur.
  • Perform pre-anesthetic screenings, including physical evaluations and patient interviews, and document results.
  • Discharge patients from post-anesthesia care.

 

Managerial Functions

  • Ensure adequate stock levels are maintained in the anaesthetic rooms at all times and that non-stock requisition orders are dealt with appropriately.
  • Provide a commitment to expanding existing skills, assisting in the planning and implementation of the Anaesthetic and peri-operative assessment nursing role.

  • Develop good interpersonal relationships with nursing staff through effective communication and sound management systems.
  • Ensure that the optimum use of manpower resources is achieved through careful planning and monitoring of off-duty scheduling.
  • Provide direction to all staff within the department on proper handling of materials, apparatus, tools for the patient.
  • Participate in training programs to achieve personal development and specialization.
  • Monitor new staff and learners, and also participates in staff development and performance reviews.
  • Identify the educational needs of staff, develop programmes to meet these needs and help staff towards their professional development.

 

Patient Care

  • Conduct pre- and post-operative education by providing verbal instructions to patient’s family or guardian during pre-operative period about the surgical experience.
  • Serve as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team.
  • Teach patients and their family members or guardians on how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation.
  • Interact with patients, families and visitors in a mature , courteous and responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional hospital environment.

 

Maintenance

  • Operate clinical equipment according to equipment procedures including safety and quality control checks.
  • Ensure the safe operation of equipments and machinery and follow procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.

 

Health and Safety

  • Carry out duties and responsibilities in compliance with Lily hospitals’ health and safety policy and statutory regulations.
  • Ensure a clean, comfortable and safe environment for patients, clients and members of staff.

The Person

  • Minimum academic qualification of a Diploma in Nursing Anaesthesia
  • 1 to 3 years relevant work experience in the health sector.
  • Registration with the National Association of Nurses and Midwifery of Nigeria and must be licensed to practice.
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft office package.
  • Outstanding communication (oral and written), interpersonal and people management skills.
  • Possess high degree of accuracy and attention to details.
  • Knowledge of Nurse Practice Act.
  • Knowledge of safety and injection control practices.

Travel: 20%

Working Conditions – The Anaesthetic Nurse is required to stand, sit, walk frequently and operate a variety of specialized instruments and equipments and a computer which requires dexterity of hands and fingers. The person is required to have fine motor skills and visual acuity. The person must be able to participate in presentations and meetings and also engage in constant talking and listening.
